i've been learning to drive my whole life
...but maybe that would be naive.
...no man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. (John Donne, Meditation XVII) ...I am a man: nothing human is alien to me. (Terence) ...it could be that there are many streams of consciousness in each of us... (Rita Carter, Mapping the Mind)

To quote the simpsons, it's just a bunch of stuff that happened.
Actually, I'm a little less cynical than that. In the last year I've experienced a wider range of emotions and feelings than I ever have in my whole life. And it's been tough at times, but in a way I'm glad I went through it. The old whatever doesn't kill you will only make you stronger cliche. But everything you do has an effect on who you are, it's up to you how you decide to act on it and what to take away from the experience.
...and maybe being naive isn't such a bad thing sometimes.
yeah, i tend to agree with you. i'm big on the idea that most of us are able to make choices that impact on our happiness, and are therefore responsible for it. i don't accept that being happy just *happens* to you.
and about being naive: i believe that we have a duty to keep alive a spark of innocence within ourselves, to fuel our sense of wonder, and give us hope.
